The music recorded on these discs was carefully crafted by composers in their workshops and performers in rehearsals with the hope that their collective endeavors would subsequently enrich many who listen, study, and enjoy these works. Each composition is heard in its premiere recording, and the compilation presents a rich variety of collaborative and creative efforts. The recordings, interviews, and program notes document the composers' respective inspirations and musical intentions. As such, they are objects prepared for future use. This commissioning and recording project culminated in the monumental 2011 China Tour of the University of Michigan Symphony Band, fifty years after the bands 1961 Russian Tour.
